Fan-led review leads to introduction of Football Governance Bill

19th Mar 2024

The Supporters Trust has welcomed the Football Governance Bill, now before Parliament, as a big step in the right direction towards much-needed football reform.

The Trust, alongside other Supporters Trusts from across the football pyramid, addressed Tracey Crouch directly three years ago as part of her fan-led review.

Trust chair Andy Roberts said: "We have always felt that the three planks of reform for English football are those of accountability, sustainability and transparency.

"Owners have to be more open and explicit about their governance and finances, both to a club's shareholders and its supporters.

"To that end we support robust independent regulation which ensures that 'fit and proper' checks on owners are regularly undertaken and are acted upon accordingly.

"And further to the founding principles of Supporters Trusts we will always support meaningful, not token, supporter representation as part of football governance."
